Indian Railways provides a valuable service of transporting dead bodies at a low cost. In 2023, 160 bodies have been transported from Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Bhusaval, and Solapur divisions. Most requests come from families of migrant workers in north India. Central Railway trains transported 754 bodies in 2022, 252 in 2021, and 197 in 2020. The bodies are packed in airtight coffins and undergo necessary verifications. The railways offer this service as a social responsibility, sacrificing revenue. It is particularly helpful for lower-income groups.
