Nearly a quarter of merchandise imports in India in FY23 were carried out by importers complying with supply chain safety norms accredited by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), according to CBIC Chairman Vivek Johri. The 'AEO programme' offered quicker clearance of shipments at ports, lower inspection rates, faster tax refunds, deferred duty payment and self-declaration of the origin of goods. India is also negotiating mutual recognition of AEO with the UAE, Australia, Russia, Japan and the East African Community to offer trade privileges to trusted exporters, importers and logistics players, regardless of their country.
