The Indian government has made efforts to expand and modernize the marine sector, including the construction of new berths and terminals, mechanization of existing ones, and the development of road and rail connectivity. This has increased the capacity of major ports, with a handling capacity of 1,617 MTPA. Measures have also been taken to improve maritime training and increase employment opportunities for seafarers. Policies promoting ship building and Indian flagging of vessels have been implemented, including financial assistance and subsidy support to Indian shipping companies.
