AirAsia India has conducted India's first commercial flight using an indigenously produced sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) blend. The biofuel, derived from sugarcane molasses, was developed using alcohol-to-jet technology. The aviation industry has made a commitment to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 but since aircraft can be two to five times more expensive to run on biofuels, the challenge lies in making SAF a cost-effective alternative. India's potential to become a cost-effective producer of SAF is being explored since it has feedstock for potential production of 19-24 million tonnes of SAF per year.
